She was lost off North Caroline August 23, 1925

Bear of Oakland


The Bear, 1675 tons. 190 feet long steam barkentine
with 29 feet 9 inches beam, 17 1/2 feet draft
Launch January 1874 from
Alexander Stephen Shipyard, Dundee, Scotland.
Designed and built for Artic and sub-Artic sealing.
1884 purchased by the United States to rescue The Greely
scientific expedition on the northern tip of Greenland.
3 March 1885 the Bear was transferred
to the Revenue Marine Service.
The Bear was decommissioned on 7 June 1944.

Rose Standish
1887 sold to Frontier Steamboat Company of Calais, Maine
Built in Brooklyn 1863
154 feet length over all
27 foot Beam, 392 gross tons

The Rose Standtish sailed the Saint Croix River between Maine and New Brunswick. From Calais, Maine to East Port, Maine, over to Saint Andrew, New Brunswick, Canada, making stops to other small communities in between.

Little Ships of The Maritimes, is researching for information that can assist in building a replica of this side-wheeler steamboat "Rose Standish" for an up coming future project
